According to North Island Conservation, there has been 11 complaints of cougar activity in Port McNeill and two in Port Hardy since June 1.

“Several feral cats have gone missing,” said Black Creek Conservation Officer James Hilgemann. He added cougars are attracted to the area because of the deer population. “Once those deer populations dwindle they tend to focus on dogs and cats.”

Hilgemann says if you experience an encounter with a cougar it’s important to maintain eye contact and make yourself seem bigger. “You want to come across as a threat to the cougar,” said Hilgemann. “Slowly back out of the area, don’t turn and run, because that may trigger the natural instinct to pounce.”

Hilgemann added reporting allows conservation to track animal movements. “We had an issue with people not reporting and just posting on Facebook,” said Hilgemeann. He also noted those working in the bush should carry bear spray or a five-inch knife.

If you spot cougar activity call the R.A.P.P. line at 1-877-952-7277.
