There was a single Motor Vehicle Incident on Highway 19 at the Coal Harbour intersection at 3:22 p.m on Thursday afternoon. RCMP, Port Hardy Fire Rescue and BCEHS were called to the scene where they located a late model pickup truck with both front tires flat resting against a concrete barrier.

The lone male driver from Port Hardy notified the RCMP he had dropped a lit cigarette, reached to pick it up, took his eyes off the road and then ended up striking the concrete barrier.

A witness to the incident reported the truck went airborne and then landed back on the road, but did not roll over.

The driver reportedly had no injuries, no tickets were issued, and alcohol was not a contributing factor to the incident.

Port Hardy Staff Sgt. Wes Olsen cautioned motorists “if something like that happens while driving, pull over instead of trying to deal with it while the vehicle is in motion.”
