Port Hardy Fire Rescue welcomed a new addition to their team in the form of a brand new fire truck.

Ladder 17 arrived at Fire Hall No 1. for the first time on June 19, being greeted by a crowd of excited onlookers.

“It’s a very proud moment for Port Hardy Fire Rescue,” said Deputy Fire Chief Brent Borg. “The functionality of this truck is going to be able to provide a lot of service to the District of Port Hardy.”

The new fire truck was officially welcomed by Fire Chief Schell Nickerson and the Port Hardy Fire Service, Port Hardy Mayor Hank Bood and a few of his council members.

Ladder 17 is known as a Quint, which means it features an extendible ladder and that can reach the tallest buildings in the District of Port Hardy.

“It has an extending ladder reaching the top story of our tallest buildings,” said Bood. “This fabulous new fire engine represents a very big investment by the District of Port Hardy for the fire fighting capacity of the Port Hardy Fire Department.”

Members of the Fire Service then ceremoniously pushed Ladder 17 into the fire hall for the first time.

“It’s a tradition in the fire service that’s been going on a couple hundred years,” said Borg.

The tradition dates back to the horse and buggy days, when fire departments’ equipment needed to be unhooked from horse carriages and then pushed into the fire hall by hand.

“The first time the truck enters the hall, the fire fighters push it into the hall, and we are going to continue that with Ladder 17,” added Borg.

Borg stated the fire truck will not be in service right away as the fire service members need time to learn how to operate the new truck.

“Our guys are going to be putting in a lot of time and dedication to learning this truck and what it’s capabilities are,” said Borg. “There will be a learning curve, but we will have it in service soon.”
