Going once, going twice, sold!

The Port Hardy Rotary Club will be holding its 32nd annual auction at the Thunderbird Mall on Nov. 3-4, so residents need to ready themselves to place a hammer price on that special item they’re keen to bid on.

“We’ve started off quite small, but we’ve gotten to the point where we get about $80,000 from the business community from Port McNeill and Port Hardy,” said Rotary Treasurer Dale Dorward. He also mentioned that business suppliers are involved in the event as well.

Over 400 money donations or item donations were made by local businesses and organizations who are involved in the live auction.

“There are about 60 Rotarians in total involved in this, plus a lot of spouses and kids,” Dorward added, noting those who are responsible for putting on this event.

He said that when all volunteers are counted, it actually ranges around 150 individuals who get together to help make this event possible.

Dorward said there are about 30 roles that Rotarians fill for the event and there are four different shifts. Some Rotarians choose to attend the whole event, but others volunteer in other capacities.

He pointed out that the Thunderbird Mall becomes a “very active place,” over the two-day event, where residents can go if they need to view the flyer of auction items. Residents can also go to Port Hardy Rotary Club’s website or Facebook page to learn more information about the event.

“After the dust is all settled, we get in the range of $40,000,” Dorward said on the net profit made from the event.

Some items for sale include gift certificates, chainsaws, and some other big items which may be well over $5,000. Most items, Dorward noted, are sold live or over the radio.

Those who are interested in bidding on an item should phone in at (250) 949-7600 once the item they’re interested in is put on what Dorward calls “the hot spot.”

Residents are able to preview and pre-bid on Friday, Nov. 2 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Thunderbird Mall. Residents can follow the live auction action on Shaw Cable Channel 223.
