The Immigrant Welcome Centre’s Mount Waddington Coalition is spearheading a free event series to bring people together in the community, meet new people, and share their cultures through food.
“This is a great opportunity to connect with others and learn more about the community you live in and the people who live there,” says Coalition manager Ann McLeod.
The first potluck in the series takes place on Sunday, March 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Port Hardy Recreation Centre (7400 Columbia Street). Attendees are encouraged to drop in with their families and bring food to share. There will be activities for children, and no registration is required.
Each event will feature a guest speaker who will share some food and stories from their culture. The Immigrant Welcome Centre will provide plate and cutlery. Participants can bring any food to share, regardless of whether it has cultural meaning to them.
On March 9, guest speaker Macrina Richards will share some of her favourite Mexican food, including enchiladas, refried beans, and buñuelos or flan.
Additional potluck events will be held on Sunday April 13, May 11, and June 8.
If you would like to volunteer as a guest speaker and share food and information from your culture, please reach out to the Coalition at kristine.salzmann@immigrantwelcome.ca
