Athletes Markus Geisler, Nadine Nolie and Terry Quirrion made quite the splash last week as the Mount Waddington chapter of Special Olympics B.C. held its inaugural Self Best Competition.
The trio had a pizza party at the pool to celebrate a successful season, and the setting of some personal best times at Thursday’s session.
In the few short months since its inception, the local chapter has gone from a speculative meeting to a full-blown swimming program in Port Hardy.
But organizers hope to expand further this summer with fundraisers and, possibly, a move into other sports. Also, organizers are gauging community interest in an ActiveStart program aimed at children from 2-6 years old. In order to make those expansions a reality, athletes, volunteers and coaches are needed — not just in Port Hardy, but in Port McNeill and Port Alice too.
The Special Olympics’ mission is to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to enrich their lives and celebrate personal achievement.
