Get ready for a fusion of hip-hop and conceptual contemporary dance when Montreal's Tentacle Tribe brings their captivating performance, Prism, to stages in Campbell River, Powell River and Sointula next month.
"Prism is a hypnotic and dreamlike voyage blending physical mastery with artistic imagination," reads a Sept. 17 media release from the BC Movement Arts Society. "Five exceptional dancers move across a reflective floor and manipulate movable mirror panels to create a kaleidoscopic experience that distorts perspectives and multiplies their images.
The performance, accompanied by original music from Elon Höglund, is described as weaving together light and movement in a way that is truly captivating and intellectually stimulating.
The Montreal-based company, led by renowned Canadian-Swedish choreographers Emmanuelle Lê Phan and Höglund, has showcased their work in international festivals and venues across the globe, including Canada, Europe, and the Middle East, since 2005.
Their work has been featured in prominent contemporary dance festivals like Festival TransAmériques, Breakin' Convention in the UK, and the Sweden-based Dansens Hus.
Tentacle Tribe’s co-founders draw from eclectic dance styles and influences. It combines "hip-hop with a contemporary edge and infusing the choreography with intricate partnering, fluid musicality, and a powerful dose of physicality," said the arts society. "Prism showcases their unique ability to transcend stylistic boundaries, resulting in a performance that is nothing short of a masterpiece."
Their artistic vision is also characterized by a dedication to expanding the limits of what hip-hop and contemporary dance can accomplish in unison.
"By blending these distinct forms, Tentacle Tribe creates performances that engage not only the body but also the intellect, challenging audiences to see dance in new and innovative ways," said the arts society.
