Filomi Days Committee member Debbie Perkovich wrote a letter to Port Hardy council asking for the following requests:

A road closure on Market Street, from the corner of Hastings to the corner of Highway 19 from Friday, July 14 3:30 p.m. until Sunday night after the fireworks;

A road closure from Thunderbird Mall, Granville Street turning onto Market Street at Dave Landon Motors to the Tsulquate Park parking lot, on Saturday, July 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. — for the annual Lions Club Filomi Days parade route; and

a road closure from Main Street in front of C&N Backpakers on Saturday, July 15 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 - for the Soapbox Derby.

The committee also requested:

The use of Carrot Park for the three days along with the water and power connections;

Additional porta potties for the site - six porta potties;

The use of more garbage cans for the sidewalk and roadway;

Plastic gloves, garbage bags, and garbage pickers;

A notice on the recreation sign; and

that the fireworks be allowed to be discharged.

“We are looking forward to an exciting weekend, especially the celebration of our 40 annual Filomi Days,” wrote Perkovich.

“We appreciate the extra help and equipment that the District provides to the weekend event.”

Coun. Pat Corbett-Labatt asked if the funds for the additional porta potties will be coming out of the District’s budget.

If the district had to pay for the additional porta potties, “it would cost $343.75 per porta pottie,” said Chief Administrative Officer Allison McCarrick, “for a grand total $2,062.50.”

“What did we do last year?” asked Port Hardy Mayor Hank Bood.

“We paid for four last year,” said McCarrick.

“Which cost us?” asked Bood.

“$1,375,” said McCarrick.

“So it’s more this year,” Bood said.

“They are requesting more this year,” confirmed McCarrick.

“Basically they’re requesting two extra ones due to volume,” said Coun. Dennis Dugas.

Council agreed to the road closures, four porta potties, and they passed the other requests for more garbage bags, gloves, and garbage pickers, as well as the fireworks to be allowed to be discharged on Sunday night over Hardy Bay.
