Port McNeill’s Fire Chief Tasos Baroutis has stepped down, citing he wants to spend more time with his young children.

Deputy Fire Chief Dean Tait has been promoted to Acting Fire Chief.

When asked if the Port McNeill Fire Department is planning to fill the position permanently, Port McNeill Mayor Shirley Ackland said the fire department is “currently looking at recruiting and conducting more training exercises right now, as it’s been a really busy year for them.”

The Port McNeill Fire Department answered calls this year from all over the North Island, including neighbouring Woss, Hyde Creek and Sointula.
