Port Hardy RCMP recently released their quarterly report (January - March 31) which had five thefts from vehicles reported, but the numbers are continuing to go up from there, says Sgt. Wes Olsen.
“We’ve seen a large spike in that area,” he said, adding from April 24 to May 6, approximately 14 more vehicles had been entered and gone through.
The thefts have been taking place in different areas all over town.
Olsen said there has been sightings of up to four or five culprits at a time, which means they might be working as a group targeting unlocked vehicles late in the evening after midnight.
“They’re going around rattling doorhandles, and if they find an open door then they rifle through the contents.”
Items such as loose change, sunglasses, wallets, cell phones, cameras, iPads, computers and work tools have been stolen.
Olsen said thefts from vehicles are definitely a reoccurring problem for Port Hardy, “and there’s no sign it’s abating anytime soon.”
He added he wants residents to make sure to phone the police with descriptions of the culprits. “If we see people around town who fit the description, we can stop them and perform a street check. If you aren’t up to no good then there won’t be any problems.”
