The Village of Port Alice has announced “exciting improvements” at Lion’s Park and Rumble Beach Marina over the next few months.

The Village of Port Alice received a grant of $609,250.00 in 2023 from the Destination Development Fund which is administered by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. The upgrades include breakwater replacement, boat ramp repair, dredging, bringing power and lighting to the dock, additional parking, new signage, repair of pathways, Wi-Fi installation, new garbage & recycling containers and bike racks. A variety of local contractors will be hired to complete the work.

Work that has been done so far includes the extension and resurfacing of the boat ramp and installation of Wi-Fi.

Construction of a new floating breakwater has begun by Tuff Marine Products in Port McNeill. Sections of breakwater expected to arrive February/March. Installation is expected to begin by early spring. The new breakwater will require less maintenance than the wooden logs that are there now.

The work at Lion’s Park is focused on increasing parking and repairing pathways. Parking expansion and clean up has begun in overflow lot across Marine Drive. Removal of dangerous trees and undergrowth near Taylor Way will begin soon to make way for more parking.

As work proceeds, the area will not always be fully accessible. There will be machines in and around the area at various times. Residents are asked to avoid the area when they see work being done. The park will be fully closed when trees are being removed. Signs will be up to indicate limited access.

The boat launch and access to McWilkies will not be affected by the work being completed.
