Thanks to a generous grant from the BC Alliance for Healthy Living Society, all the public swims and skates held at the Port Hardy recreation centre will be free of charge from now until June 2025.
Port Hardy Recreation noted in a social media post this is a "fantastic opportunity for everyone in our community to stay active, have fun, and enjoy quality time together without any cost."
The District of Port Hardy's chief administrative officer Heather Nelson-Smith confirmed via email that staff applied for the grant funds earlier in the year because council wanted to "support barrier-free recreation" in town.
When asked to comment on the funding, Port Hardy mayor Pat Corbett-Labatt said council was "very thrilled with being able to offer this to the residents, and we're already looking at ways to offer it past the [June 2025] date."
