Freestyle wrestling starts back up at Port Hardy Secondary School

Freestyle wrestling starts back up at PHSS on Wednesday, Oct. 16

Freestyle wrestling will be back at the Port Hardy Secondary School gymnasium after the Thanksgiving long weekend.

"I'm really looking forward to getting back on the mats and coaching the youth again," said assistant coach Tyson Whitney, noting head coach/team manager Paul Cagna will be back as well.

"We're going to train hard, compete down island, and most importantly, have fun," added Whitney.

Freestyle wrestling matches are six minutes long, where the ultimate goal is to throw your opponent and pin their shoulders to the mat for one second, which results in an immediate win.

In the last two years, Port Hardy Secondary School has had two students qualify for the BC Provincial Championships. Last season, Grade 12 student Sheldon Frank punched his ticket to provincials by placing fifth at the Vancouver Island Zone Championships in Victoria.

Wrestling starts back up at PHSS on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Practices are scheduled for Mondays from 5-6 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5-6:30 p.m. until March.
