Bottom fishing certainly has been tough for the last few days due to the strong tides. Halibut are definitely keying in on salmon scraps for bait as well as herring. Salmon fishing has been on and off, but there still has been some good catches coming across the docks. Anchovies, Coyote spoons and Lahr Jensen Flash Flies all continue to produce both Chinook and Coho salmon. Watch your fish finder for signs of bait and Salmon and put your gear in the zone.

Sointula sail racing

Sointula hosted a sailing race on July 1. The winner was Sailing Vessel (SV) SV Tick Tac, second place was SV Astray from Port McNeill, and pictured here in the photo is the SV Ice 9 from Alert Bay, which belongs to Declam Gohm. All participants received a great prize of boat products. The sailing rave runs annually and is a good draw for the community on Malcolm Island. The Lion Club runs the harbour in Sointula.

17-year-old Port Hardy Secondary School student Jaylon Grenier set a personal best at the Kusam Klimb this year, which ultimately made him the fastest Port Hardy ‘klimber’.
