Leightan Wishart’s councillor candidate biography

My name is Leightan Wishart and I moved to Port Hardy in 1990 with my wife and two sons. The boys have grown and moved on, but my wife and I enjoy living in Port Hardy and have no plans to leave. We like the lifestyle, and have great friends here.

I moved here for a job and since retiring in 2014 I’ve wanted to give back to this community that has been very kind to us. I ran for council in 2014 and missed by three votes. I was elected in a by-election in 2016. I enjoy the time and find there are things that need to be changed or improved. I’m currently Deputy Mayor and I’m a member of the Emergency Preparedness committee (Chair), Operations Services committee, Finance committee, First Nations Relations committee, Cannabis Advisory committee (Chair). I represent Council as an alternate on the RDMW Board of Directors, the RDMW Hospital Board, VI Regional Library Board, and member of the Marine Plan Partnership, Collaborative Health Care Working Group and I represent Council at Port Hardy Fire & Rescue.

I’ve was elected to the School Board in 2002 and have been re-elected every election since (16 years), sitting as Chair for the past 10 years. I enjoy this work very much as well.
