A grizzly bear was spotted roaming in a yard in the Hyde Creek/Nimpkish Heights area of Northern Vancouver Island.
The animal was immediately reported to conservation, who were quick to reply to the Gazette’s request for more information, confirming it was in fact a grizzly bear that had been spotted near the Port McNeill area.
Conservation noted they are asking the public to ensure their attractants, such as garbage, pet food and birdseed, are securely stored, as that is the best way to help keep the public, and bears, safe.
Officers are also asking people to give the bear space to move on. “Do not try to approach the bear to take pictures. This is risky behaviour that is not condoned by the COS.”
Conservation confirmed it has not received any reports of aggressive behaviour or conflicts associated to this grizzly.
While uncommon, grizzly bears from the Central Coast have occasionally island-hopped here in the past and will likely continue to do so.
Conservation officers are monitoring the situation and are asking the public to please use caution and report any sightings to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277.
