Alastair Robin Wilson

March 12, 2018

Jul 19, 1940 - Mar 12, 2018
It is with sad hearts that we announce Alastair's passing at the age of 77. Predeceased by his loving wife and kindred spirit, Carole Elaine, he is survived by son John Kerrick, (Donelly) and daughter Lara Jane (Kelly), grandchildren Liam and Keeley, and constant feline companion, Jamie. Eldest of five siblings, Alastair is also survived by sister Hilda and brothers Leslie, Eric, and Ian.

Alastair was born July 19, 1940 in Glasgow, Scotland to William and Jane during the first weeks of the Battle of Britain. The Wilson Family immigrated to Canada after the Second World War, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax in 1947 aboard RMS Aquitania. Following an epic cross- country journey by car they settled in New Westminster, then relocated to Port Hardy in 1953.

Alastair's lifelong appreciation of the natural world was shaped in part by his adventurous and inquisitive teenage years exploring the rugged North Island. A teacher by aptitude and by profession, Alastair shared his humble intellect and curiosity with generations of his students and with his children, grandchildren, and friends.

Most happy on the water or working the soil, Alastair valued highly the friendships he and Carole made during their years Scottish Country Dancing and outrigger canoeing with the Aloha Paddlers. Together, he and Carole cherished the tranquility and productivity of their garden.

Always aware of the seasons, Alastair would observe how life's changes coincided with the turn of year: he passed away on March 12, a warm spring-like Victoria day, with the late afternoon sun shining upon him. It was a perfect day for gardening and a fitting end to the earthly life of a gentleman, husband, brother, father, and friend.

We wish to pass our enduring and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Eric Shafonsky and Dr. Brian Mestelman and the entire compassionate and caring team at RJH 2SE.

In Alastair's memory, please consider a donation to EcoJustice or to the Victoria Hospital Foundation. An informal gathering to celebrate his life will take place later this year.
