Anton Toth

January 3, 1927 - April 6, 2004.

Toni passed away at the Port Hardy Hospital on April 6 at the age of 77, after a ten month battle with lung cancer. He was born in Vezsprem, Hungary, the younger son of Johann and Erzsebet Toth. He enrolled in the Hungarian Air Force Academy when he was 12, and served for several years as navigator in the Luftwaffe, during WW2. He remained in Germany after the war ended, working on a farm and completing a diploma program in agriculture. He came to Canada in 1953, and worked at the Rosberg farm in Smithers for a year, before joining the Department of Transport. Based in Vancouver, Toni travelled to a number of B.C. airports, and was first in Port Hardy in 1955. He returned to Port Hardy from Sandspit in 1958, and continued at the Airport as a member of the maintenance crew, as water/sewer operator, and then MISA program operator, until his retirement in 1980. Several years later, he joined the Regional District of Mount Waddington, and worked as water/sewer operator in Coal Harbour until 1991.

In earlier years, Toni hunted and was an avid fly and river fisherman. He enjoyed classical music, reading factual material and following the Formula 1 Grand Prix races. He loved his numerous dogs and cats, and in later years spent many happy hours watching the antics of a variety of birds that visited his front yard each day.

Toni is survived by Diane, his loving wife of 46 years, three godchildren, Janet (Geoff) Stevenson and Derek (Angela) Norman of Kelowna, B.C., Alexandra (Bob) Smith of Hay River, N.T., and their families, and long-time friends Beryl and Ray Norman of Kelowna, also his mother-in-law Margaret Fry of Whitehorse, Y.T., sisters-in-law Dale Brock of Nelson, B.C., Sheryl (George) Law of Whitehorse, Y.T., brothers-in-law Daryl (June) Fry of Vancouver, B.C., Dal (Kerry) Fry of Astorville, Ontario and their families, and many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother Frank in Hungary, and his infant son Timothy?in 1978. Toni will be sadly missed. Cremation has taken place. There will be no service, by request. An open house will be announced at a later date.
