July 1, 1960 – September 19, 2018
It is with sadness that we announce the passing, after a short illness, of Dawn. A kind and loving lady, she will be missed by those who knew her.
She leaves behind her husband/ partner Skip Sponek (and his family), her father Brian Welchman, daughters Jennifer Dewhirst (grandchildren Annissa, Arianna & Kaydence) and Amanda Dewhirst. Also, nephews Christopher Welchman (Alannah & daughter Kiara) and Kevin Welchman, aunt Marjorie (Ian & daughters Shannon & Heather). Other family members include, in Peru: Delicia Welchman (Christy & Jean Carlos), in England: Sian Smith, Lynn Welchman, Andrea Welchman, Graham Welchman, Marion Welchman, Alan Welchman and all their respective family members.
Born in Elgin, Scotland, Dawn moved with her parents and brother Kim to England until the age of seven, when the family immigrated to Canada. They lived initially in Fort McMurray, where her mother was one of her schoolteachers, then moved to Port Hardy. Upon graduation she worked in banking, got married and had two children. After a couple of career changes she attended Malaspina (gold medal grad) and moved to Campbell River where she worked as a maintenance planner in the mill. When the mill closed, she continued with planning with Suncor in Alberta, working on a 7-on, 7-off schedule from camp to her home in Campbell River.
She enjoyed her travels with Skip (especially when on their Harleys) and was so proud of her daughters and grandchildren. We miss her, but she is reunited with her mother Mary, brother Kim and grandson Tyson.
Thanks go to the doctors and nurses at the Campbell River hospital who catered to the needs of Dawn, they were knowledgeable, professional and caring.
A celebration of life will be held at the Campbell River Legion on Sunday 14th October at 1pm.
