Dixie Grace Womsley was born in Mount Vernon, Washington to Lester and Esther. After her father's death, her mother remarried, and they moved to Sedro Woolley joining the Wedin household. In 1962 the family relocated to Vancouver Island. Dixie was always social at school, acting in several school plays then graduated from Campbell High School in 1964. Dixie lived in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Winnipeg, finally arriving in Tofino in the 1960s where she married Bob Travers, a commercial fisherman. Soon she joined him as a deckhand and cook. Dixie and Bob moved to Port Hardy and in 1983 they gave birth to their son Nik. Dixie made a lasting impact in the Fort Rupert Elementary School PAC by volunteering and cooking for fundraisers. Later, working as a jail guard for the Port Hardy RCMP detachment. Everyone always looked forward to her baking and company. After the passing of her husband, Dixie retired in Port Hardy. One of her last joys was welcoming her two grandchildren.
Dixie will be remembered as a loving, friendly, and joyous lady with sharp wit and an excellent cook. Her fondest memories were the family dinners and get-togethers. She will be missed.
