Florence Elsie Kofoed

February 18, 2005

Elsie was born on February 5, 1927 in Cheshire, England and came to Canada in 1954 with her parents. Predeceased by her parents, Elsie passed away February 18, 2005 in Port Hardy after a short illness. Elsie is lovingly survived by Knud, her husband of 48 years, and many long-time friends who became her “family”. Elsie met Knud in Victoria, married in Port Alberni in 1957, then moved to Port Hardy and together opened Port Hardy Building Supply Ltd. in 1960 where they both worked until retiring in 1992. Elsie was always active in her community, she was the first woman (Alderwoman) on council in 1967. Elsie also opened the first Sears Catalogue Store in Port Hardy, working out of the building supply store. For the past 5 years Elsie was involved with Toastmasters which she thoroughly enjoyed and loved to be a part of. Many thanks go out to all those who supported Elsie during her illness; her friends, the doctors (both in Victoria and Port Hardy) as well as the hospital staff for their care and compassion. A memorial service will be held at St. Columba’s United-Anglican Church in Port Hardy at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 5, 2005. Refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers donations in Elsie’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. We will miss her wit, intelligence and zest for life.
