Margaret Colwell

December 17, 2004

Colwell-Margaret passed away peacefully, after a courageous fight with cancer for seven and one-half months, on Friday, December 17, 2004, at Port McNeill Hospital. She will be greatly missed by her partner and husband of 28 years, Phil Imrie; her daughter Laura; and her son Kevin. She is lovingly remembered by her mother and father, Evelyn and Bryan, her brothers Doug (Maggie) and David (Sarah), and her many friends and relatives. Margaret was born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1952, and spent her early years in Cranbrook, BC. For high school, Margaret went to California with her family, where she graduated with honours. It was here in Dixon that Margaret began her love affair with music, playing the French horn in the school band, and singing in the church choir. Margaret went on to the University of California, Davis, completing a degree in psychology. After her younger brother Robert died in 1974, Margaret moved “back home” (Canada) with her family, met Phil in 1976 in Sointula, BC, and raised two wonderful children. Margaret worked at both the Sointula Credit Union and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Sointula, where she was much loved for her kind words, graciousness and good humour, and trusted for her wonderful service. Margaret was a founding member of the Malcolm Island Singers (now the Sointula Singers) and was an integral part of Fifth Wheel, a quintet which recorded a CD. Margaret also served the community in many, many ways, including the Sointula Soccer club, Harmony Glen and the Sointula Medical Centre. Margaret was passionate about reading and was never without a book in hand. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Port McNeill Hospital for their skill and compassion. One service will be held at Northwood United Church, 8855 156 Street, Surrey on Monday, December 27 at 2:00, and a memorial and burial of Margaret’s ashes will occur in Sointula on January 15, 2005. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the BC Cancer Foundation.
