Sonia Dvoracek

No matter how many times I'd asked her-and toward the last few years it became a pleading-she would not leave Holberg and move at least closer to Victoria, to me, to more sunshine, to decent medical care. I guess she loved something about the wild, wind-battered, wet of the place. Maybe it was the colourful people who called that place their home that she loved so much.
For those who knew Sonia, loved her. It was impossible not to. I've asked some of those people to tell me about my mom, what impressed them about her. Hard working, they told me. Honest. Dependable. Always kind. Invariably one thing came up over and again; she gave to others more than she ever asked for herself. Some said she gave to a fault. But as her son I say, she just gave what was in her to give.
Rest in peace, momma. You've earned it the hard way.
There will be a memorial service at the Scarlet Ibis on Saturday September 5, 2009 at 7pm.
