Alert Bay RCMP officers joined a local community event on May 26 to help raise funds for the annual June Sports Soccer Tournament, which is set to occur between June 14-16 on Cormorant Island.

The officers were busy helping out at the annual Loonie Auction, which coincided with an all-day scheduled BC Hydro power outage where the entire island lost power from 8 a.m. to well past 7 p.m. while BC Hydro conducted upgrades to the power system.

"In the spirit of working with our First Nations and Alert Bay communities, we provided our Indigenous policing service tent and BBQ and cook for the communities," noted Sgt. Erin Stevenson, detachment commander for the Alert Bay RCMP.

The RCMP also noted there will be a parade procession on Friday, June 14 from the BC Ferries Terminal on Front Street to the 'Namgis First Nation's Big House, a location of great cultural and spiritual significance, where traditional ceremony and business is conducted.

Several RCMP members will be leading the parade with Indigenous Elders.
