Brothers lead the way

There’s a line somewhere that reads, in part: ... and a child shall lead them.

OK, it’s actually from the Bible — Isaiah 11:6 — but in the case of the Fenton-Passmore brothers, it’s appropriate these young boys should kick-off our annual Hamper Fund by their selfless act of donating all their birthday money to the cause.

The boys, Angus, eight, and six-year-old Liam, donated $225 to the fund that makes sure no one on the North Island goes without during Christmas.

“We want people to have a good Christmas,” said Angus.

The Port Hardy boys — who both attend Eagle View School in Grade 3 and Grade 1, respectively — also donated a new toy and a bagful of non-persihable food.

“They recognize they have a lot, and that it’s nice to share when you can,” said proud mom, Shannon Passmore.

That’s exactly the spirit that’s kept the fund alive for the past 31 years and has directly helped thousands of North Islanders enjoy a better Christmas.

The fund has grown each year to meet the ever increasing demand and our target for 2011 is to raise $30,000.

A hefty amount, to be sure, but every single penny goes to make sure children have presents under the tree and a traditional Christmas dinner on the table.

The donation containers will soon be at more than 100 locations on the North Island and we hope to raise enough so that not a single child goes without this Christmas.

And we need you to make that happen.
