TELEGRAPH COVE—Vancouver Island has the highest density of cougars and also the highest rate of attacks on humans. And chances are, if you spend any amount of time in the woods, a cougar’s seen you while you’ve been totally oblivious to its presence.
That’s a scary thought. But Paula Wild’s new book, The Cougar, Beautiful, Wild and Dangerous provides insight into the impressive predator and the latest information on how to deal with a curious or aggressive cougar.
Telegraph Cove Resort and Campground invites the public to meet Wild at its annual craft fair on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The craft fair will feature a wide array of vendors and products, the salmon barbecue on the boardwalk from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., and the always popular hot corn on the cob throughout the day.
The craft fair is the kickoff to Telegraph Cove’s signature weekend, which concludes Sunday, Aug. 3, with the annual Salmon Derby and auction. The derby runs from dawn until 4 p.m. The $10 entry fee, plus auction proceeds, go to the Kokish Hatchery salmon enhancement program. Everyone is invited to a salmon potluck dinner in the campground beginning at 6 p.m., followed by the auction and salmon derby awards and prizes.
