The votes came in late last night, with former Port Hardy councillor Dennis Dugas running away with a landslide mayoral victory over incumbent mayor Hank Bood.

Dugas received 806 votes to Bood’s 320, which came out to a whopping 70.3 per cent of the vote. Dugas was surprised by the way the vote went, mainly because he didn’t “hear anything official until after midnight,” he laughed, adding he was sitting there wondering what was going on and if they were possibly doing a recount because the voting was close.

He added that when he found out he was the new mayor of Port Hardy, it was “pretty overwhelming, but also pretty humbling to be chosen.”

As for projects that Dugas is excited to get to work on now that he’s mayor, he pointed out the multiplex project. “That’s going to be an exciting one for the community, it’s on our plate and we will see where it goes and see what happens with the tendering process - at this time I know we’ve got a lot of support to continue with the project and it’s what the community wants.”

Dugas ended the interview by saying he wanted to thank Bood and former councillor Rick Marcotte for their years of service to the district, and that he is excited to get to work with his new council.

Port Hardy voted in six councillors: Pat Corbett-Labatt, Janet Dorward, Fred Robertson, John Tidbury, Treena Smith, and Leightan Wishart.
