Power was knocked out to Port Hardy and the surrounding area Monday afternoon after a rotten tree fell across hydro lines approximately 10 kilometres south of Port Hardy.

PORT HARDY - Residents in Port Hardy and several surrounding areas on North Vancouver Island found themselves without electricity beginning at 2:30 Monday afternoon after a BC Hydro line was downed by a fallen tree alongside Highway 19 approximately 10 kilometres south of Port Hardy.

A BC Hydro employee said several separate outages struck the North Island Monday and gave an estimated time for restoration of service as 7 a.m. Tuesday. But electricity was back on in the town of Port Hardy at about 4:15 p.m., less than two hours after the initial outage.

Other areas and communities affected by the outages include Fort Rupert/Storey's Beach, Tacan Industrial Park, Coal Harbour and Winter Harbour, according to BC Hydro.
