PORT HARDY – The District is taking the first step towards implementing a new rainwater management system following the flooding during extreme rainfall in September 2010.
The first priority identified by engineers for upgrading, is the replacement of the dual culverts in the Beaver Harbour Road area where most homes experienced flooding in September.
“The Beaver Harbour/Scotia Road upgrades are part of a comprehensive storm water plan for the municipality that will see the current system updated to handle 100-year rain events, while increasing the health and safety for the community,” said a grant recommendation from Patti Smedley, community and economic development coordinator for the District of Port Hardy.
The current undersized culverts would be replaced with natural arch bottomless culverts.
The District hopes to offset the $573,960 cost for the project with a $400,000 grant application to Towns for Tomorrow.
