In loving memory ~

Derek Drake Hayden-Luck embarked on his last great journey on Tuesday, August 8th, in his 97th year. Derek was a one-of-a-kind guy who led a one-of-a-kind life. He began and completed his life in Victoria, B.C. Derek was enrolled in the Armed Forces, worked as a travelling salesman (where he perfected the art of hitting road signs with empty bottles as he drove past!), served as an alderman in Port Hardy, was a realtor in Port Hardy and Vancouver, and ran the Blue Sky Motel in Sechelt for several years.

He learned to sail after buying his first boat in Malta. He then proceeded to solo sail around the world twice, once being rescued by a tuna boat off the Baja coast. His trusty Makoolis provided him with the best stories of sharks, storms, Spam, and the many fascinating people he met along the way.

He was a self-identified "cantankerous old coot", and despite dealing with chronic pain for many years, he always had a twinkle in his eye and a Werther's in his pocket for the ladies and children. He loved a good glass of Scotch and a bag of Hawkins Cheezies. He read voraciously, did crossword puzzles daily, and was always game to beat you at crib.

He leaves his wife, Grace, two children, three stepchildren, and their families. His passing and stories will be mourned, remembered, and relived by countless lifelong friends.
