Sadly, we announce the passing of Mavis Evans, on October 7, 2007, a long time resident of Port Hardy, after her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and strokes.
Mavis moved to Port Hardy in June 1971. She worked at Dong Chong Supermarket, Lucky Dollar Market, Port Hardy Rentals, and finally found her niche at the Doctor’s Office. She was the bookkeeper, supply clerk, babysitting Grandma on call, sympathetic shoulder, and probably best known as the nice Grandma lady with a drawer full of suckers.
Mavis was also involved with the Lioness club. She created wonderful cakes for their sales, and helped with their community projects. The Legion was very important to her, and she, a 30 year member, volunteered on their executive board as both Treasurer, and Membership Chairman, and also contributed through the Ladies Auxiliary with assistance in catering and planning Legion functions. Mavis became involved in the Senior Center and was the Treasurer until she was no longer able to perform her duties due to her progressive illness.
Mavis is survived by, her husband, Ken Roath; Daughter, Pat McCart (John) of Port Hardy, Daughter, Nancy Proctor (Randy) of Alberta; Son, Bob Scharff (Susan) of Vancouver; and Grandchildren; Bryan McCart (Tara) & Erin McCart (Justin), Danny Proctor (Laura) and David Proctor (Sharon), Great-granddaughter Julia Proctor; Grandsons Robert Scharff and David Scharff. Extended family includes Arlene & John Jossy, Lloyd and Olga Roath, Mitch & Crystal Roath, Fred & Debbie Roath; and their families.
Mavis was very loving; and in turn a much loved person. We will miss her forever. We would like to thank the Nurses, Doctors, Nurse’s Aides and support staff of the Port Hardy Hospital, and Eagle Ridge Manor for their compassionate, considerate and very dedicated care of our Wonderful Mom, Mavis. She was in the hands of Angels on earth.
