The Port McNeill Logger Sports Society held their seventh annual Logger Sports competition on July 1-2, with athletes from all over coming to compete in the 10-plus events offered.

On Saturday, July 2, underneath a clouded sky that would soon give way to periodic rain over the course of the day, a large crowd took over the bleachers and chowed down on salmon burgers while cheering their local competitors on to victory during the main show.

The event was MC’d and DJ’d by Ben James and Michelle Lefler for the sixth year in a row, and James had the crowd in stitches with one liner after one liner while calling fast-paced, play-by-play at the same time.

James’ favourite thing about coming to Port McNeill to MC the event is “the community. I think the people are very receptive to us here and we always have fun going fishing afterwards.”

Local competitor Thomas Symons, now in his third year of competing at the Logger Sports event, took 2nd place in the Novice Underhand event and felt he “could’ve done better and could’ve done worse,” adding that what he likes best about competing at Loggers Sports is “the thrill, the adrenaline, and the free food.”

Another local competitor, Ally Briscoe, who won the Ladies Axe Throw and the Ladies Single Buck events, said she loves competing at Logger Sports because “it’s a lot of fun,” adding that she’ll be competing at another Logger Sports event in Powell River in two weeks.

Full results from Port McNeill’s Loggers Sports 2016 event to be featured in next week’s Gazette.
