Youth soccer clubs set volunteer meetings

Port Hardy Youth Soccer will hold an executive meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at EVES.

Soccer coaches needed

Port Hardy Youth Soccer will hold an executive meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at Eagle View Elementary, and all potential coaches and other parent volunteers are urged to attend.

Coaches are needed to guide up to 18 teams of players, ranging from age five to age 18, during the upcoming spring soccer season. An assistant coach or manager will also be needed for each team, and posts on the executive will also need to be filled.

A separate, shorter season for four-year-old tot players may be held if somebody steps up to volunteer to take it on.

If sufficient numbers of volunteers cannot be found, the season will be at risk of not happening, organizers say. For more information, call 250-949-8928.

Hickes fills fast

The 34th annual Oscar Hickes Memorial Hockey Tournament has filled all 16 available spots, and a waiting list of teams is forming.

Organizer Russell Murray noted the $600 registration fee for each team must be paid in advance. After Feb. 1, teams on the waiting list will be offered spots of teams which have registered but failed to pay the fee, he said.

The tourney, open to players 19-over, will be held Mar. 7-10 at Port Alice Arena. Teams will play in four divisions: A-Competitive; B-Commercial; C-Recreational; and D-Oldtimers.

Cheques should be payable to Oscar Hickes Society, Box 66, Port Alice, BC, V0N 2N0.

Get fit with friends

Port Hardy residents and other North Islanders are invited to participate in the Honour Your Health Challenge, a free, 14-week program of exercise, culture and healthy living.

The program, a partnership between Port Hardy Secondary School and Sports Med BC, kicked off yesterday, Jan. 30, at PHSS.

Participants will meet twice each week for a 40- to 60-minute light warmup and walk/jog routine developed by sports medicine doctors. In the 14th week a 10-kilometre walk/run through Port Hardy will be held in honour of loved ones lost to or affected by cancer.

Each practice will end with a traditional celebration song, and the program will wrap up with a catered dinner. One lucky winner will have the chance to win an iPad. On Jan. 30 Sports Med BC will come to Port Hardy to take vitals, and return to check progress at the end of the challenge.

Dates and times of workouts will be determined at the time of registration. For more information contact Stephanie Nelson, PHSS connections worker, at 250-949-7443, ext. 3233.
