Chemainus snow sculpture attracts attention, Murphy does not approve

New snow sculpture captures attention in the dog days of winter

Snow dogs are cool.

Dee Gallant of Chemainus decided to create one amid the heavy snowfall Wednesday for a change of pace. After all, she’s always been a very creative person.

“Snowmen are overrated,” she declared. “Snow dogs rule.”

The snow dog is a dead ringer for her husky Murphy, other than the obvious colour difference.

“I didn’t just leave Murphy out in the snow too long, it’s a replica,” quipped Gallant.

And, considering her time constraints, it was quite a great effort.

“Not bad for less than half an hour,” she indicated. “I managed to get the curly tail and flopped ear, it wasn’t easy.”

And then there was jealous resistance from Murphy.

“As soon as I started building it, Murphy was trying to destroy it,” noted Gallant.

“He kept trying to dig it down. I had to rebuild it a couple of times. I think he was worried that it would get some of his treats.”

Murphy is known as Chemainus’ famous holiday dog, dressing up in fancy outfits on special occasions.

Murphy and Gallant are also the dynamic duo who gained international fame a few years ago by scaring away a cougar with a Metallica song while on a hike.
