One of the things that amazes me about the topography of Northern Vancouver Island is how the mountains come to an abrupt end between Port McNeill and Port Hardy.

Dear Editor,

Looking back and moving forward

I want so badly right now to write an editorial about Christy Clark resigning from the BC Liberal party leadership and as an MLA, but I won’t.

The day dawned clear and bright, the salmon berry bushes aiming their little pink tongues to the sun while robins did their spring dances across the lawn. I was ready to belt out a chorus of “Oh what a beautiful morning” when I noticed the best thing of all about this new day, one that I had been waiting for: there was absolutely no wind; not a breeze.

Are you a modern gardener? One who plants and nurtures your own garden space with an eye to enhancing the biodiversity in your community? It has taken a few generations, but now we are at a point where we have torn up our property deed, figuratively, and replaced it with a consciousness of the impact our outdoor activity has on nature, up and down the street.

Bottom fishing certainly has been tough for the last few days due to the strong tides. Halibut are definitely keying in on salmon scraps for bait as well as herring. Salmon fishing has been on and off, but there still has been some good catches coming across the docks. Anchovies, Coyote spoons and Lahr Jensen Flash Flies all continue to produce both Chinook and Coho salmon. Watch your fish finder for signs of bait and Salmon and put your gear in the zone.

At one time everyone knew The Merry Widow, a precocious lady to say the least, with her store of precious metals hung about her. You have to talk to some of the North Island old timers to get her whole story. They remember her alright; during the days of the mine at Benson Lake she lured them all with her alpine treasures until a mine was eventually started on her slopes.
